Weekend Gaming Review – May 2020

Greetings! I didn’t have much lined up for a blog post this weekend. I had also gotten a bit behind on any WordPress reading or social media…uh, stuff over the past week. So, for today I’m writing one of my rambles updates about what I’ve been playing or thinking about recently.

2020 Resolution – Build Gaming PC.

In my 2020 resolutions post back in January, I stated one of my goals was to build my own gaming pc. I had been acquiring parts over the past few months and received the final few pieces I needed to put everything together this past week. On Saturday, I spent the majority of the day assembling the case and components. Later, after some double-checking, everything was up and running smoothly. So…there’s where my weekend was spent.

I’ve mentioned before that I grew up playing games on consoles(Nintendo, for the most part) and have pretty limited experience playing games on a PC. The computer my family owned was enough to play Need For Speed II and Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, but not too much else. The last decade or so, I’ve been using a Mac for day-to-day stuff so the variety of games to play hasn’t been as plentiful as it could have been. Now that I have a more substantial gaming setup I should be able to play anything….well, except for Half-Life: Alyx. I also purchased a capture card a few months ago with the intention of getting some better game screenshots and the ability to record some gameplay videos. I had also stated in my resolutions post that I would like to possibly dabble in some streaming here and there(which I have broadcasted a couple times directly from my PS4).

In the past few months I also subscribed to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for Xbox One, so I also had the chance to try out the PC version of Game Pass. I downloaded and spent a while (re)playing The Outer Worlds, a fairly demanding game that I could use to keep an eye on things like frame rates and temperature. I also decided to try out Children of Morta – an indie hack ‘n slash/rogue-lite game I had been wanting to play for some time(pretty great, btw). I also downloaded Gears Tactics which I have read pretty good things about and sounds rather intriguing – a strategy-shooter/Gears of War game. Strategy-type games are typically one of the game genres that I’m the weakest, likely due to the few strategy titles found on consoles compared to PC, so I’m looking forward to trying that out as well as a few others.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla

<queue repeat of Immigrant Song>

It’s been nearly two weeks since I woke up to the Ubisoft/Boss Logic Twitch stream which showed some of the artwork for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed game as it was slowly revealed over the course of eight hours. The rumors that had been circulating the past couple months were confirmed as the stream culminated with the artwork depicting a Viking warrior holding a battle axe etched with the familiar assassins logo before the title Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla appeared onscreen. The next day Ubisoft released a announcement trailer for the game showing the next iteration of the long-running franchise will be set during the Viking raids of the Saxons in 9th Century England and will be titled Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and is set to release during the 2020 holiday season, presumably October or November. We also saw a few additional details such as background locations(Stonehenge!) during Microsoft’s Xbox presentation this past Thursday, but the devs for Ubisoft Montreal have confirmed the game won’t be as massive in size as AC: Odyssey and the game will incorporate an updated combat system to facilitate the brutal medieval violence we’re all clamoring for(dismemberment!). It’s far too early to tell much else about the game, but Valhalla has certainly aroused my curiosity. I’ll be anxiously awaiting more details and gameplay footage…ACTUAL gameplay. Until next time…
